Shoprite Checkers of South Africa purchased SIX strategically located
trading sector outlets, to mark the dawn of world class merchandising standards
and customer service in Zambia. With a purchase price of K2.4 billion (10
million Rand) and a plan to invest over K13 billion in refurbishment and
development of 7 supermarkets, this has been by far the most significant
transaction under the on-going privatisation of of the former NIEC group
of companies. Shoprite is ensuring that the Zambian supermarkets are exactly
the same as their South African supermarkets in terms of products, pricing,
quality, employment and service. Shoprite is drawing on its considerable
buying power and retail experience to ensure that the prices are highly
competitive and merchandising standards are world class.
