Sale of Power Division

THE Chairman of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (ZCCM), Mr. Luke J Mwananshiku, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the company, is pleased to further announce that following the recent international tender for the sale of ZCCM assets, a Consortium known as THE COPPERBELT ENERGY CONSORTIUM comprising Midlands Power International Limited, The National Grid Company plc of the United Kingdom and a team of five (5) Zambian Management staff has been selected as the winning bidder for ZCCM's Power Division the "JCO Package" (excluding the Bulk Transport, its assets and fleet of vehicles).

Power Division distributes electrical power from the National Grid to the operating divisions of ZCCM and also provides ancillary services such as civil and electrical construction, and the intermine movement of materials to support production.

For the financial year ended 31 March 1997, Power Division sales of electrical energy were 4 887 938 megawatt hours (Mwh) compared to 4 844 284 Mwh in the previous financial year. The maximum import from Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) increased from 662.5 MW last year to 664.6 MW for the year ended 31 March 1997.

Power Division has a workforce of 883 people.

Commenting on the sale, Mr F H Kaunda, Chairman of the ZCCM Privatisation Negotiating Team said that the award of the Power Division represents the first major electricity privatisation in Southern Africa and is an important step in both the privatisation of ZCCM and the development of the mining and power sectors in Zambia.

He added that this is yet another milestone.

The Copperbelt Energy Consortium comprises Midlands Power International (a wholly owned subsidiary of the UK regional electricity company which supplies and distributes over 24 Twhrs of electricity to 2.2 million customers and which is ultimately owned by Avon Energy Partners plc, a joint venture between two US based integrated electricity utilities; Cinergy Corporation and General Public Utilities of New Jersey) and National Grid Company plc (which owns and operates the transmission system in England and Wales, including approximately 7, 000 route kilometres of overhead line).

The award of "JCO" is subject to contract and the documentation is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 1997, concluded Mr. Francis Kaunda.
