EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: MAAMBA COLLIERIES LIMITED

The Zambia Privatisation Agency (ZPA) recently invited suitably qualified prospective investors to bid for up to 100% Government shareholding in the Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL). The closing date for submission of bids was Friday 5th August, 2005 and tenders were received from ten (10) entities as follows:
  1. Maamba Energy Corporation: (Zambian company)
  2. PH Motors Limited: (Zambian Company)
  3. Copperbelt Resource Ltd (CORES): (Zambian Company) in colloboration with Mwana Africa Holding: (South African Company)
  4. Gamsberg Mining Services (PTY) Ltd: (South African Company)
  5. Techno Source Consortium: (Canadian Company)
  6. H.V. Atlantic Investments (Zambian Company)
  7. Maamba Katuya Consortium: (Zambian, French, South African Consortium)
  8. Monet ISPAT Limited: (Indian Company)
  9. R.J. Cockroft: (South African Company)
  10. Chimsoro Farms Limited (Zambian Company)

    After bids have been evaluated, the ZPA Board will review the bid evaluation and select bidders for negotiations.

    MCL is a wholly owned Government company engaged in the mining and selling of coal to major industries in Zambia, as well as for exports to neighbouring countries. With 692 employees, MCL is the largest employer in Southern Province and cradles the hopes and aspirations of a large proportion of the population in the province

    It is the largest producer of coal in Zambia and has 78.2 million tonnes of coal reserves of which 60.2 million tonnes is proven and 18 million tonnes is probable. For the year ending 31st March 2004, MCL produced 66, 352 tonnes of coal and sales were K14.1 billion. MCL incurred a loss of K11.2 billion, and Net Assets on 31st March 2004 were K-27.9 billion (negative).
